It was 1987. President Reagan challenged Gorbachev to "tear down this wall." Disposable contact lenses became available. The Internet was inching along, and the first laptop computer, complete with a 3.5 inch floppy disk drive, was released by Hewlett-Packard.
 
Working from a small, upstairs loft with a slanted ceiling and a staff of one, Jay A. Buckingham watched the local and national news – and hunkered down.

​Mr. Buckingham had just left a large corporation because he wanted to offer truly independent financial advice to his clients. He knew that if he did things his way, versus the big company way, that he had the opportunity to follow his own sense of integrity – and to change more lives.
