It was 1987. President Reagan challenged Gorbachev to "tear down this wall." Disposable contact lenses became available. The Internet was inching along, and the first laptop computer, complete with a 3.5 inch floppy disk drive, was released by Hewlett-Packard.
 
Working from a small, upstairs loft with a slanted ceiling and a staff of one, Jay A. Buckingham watched the local and national news – and hunkered down.
