35 years of changing lives the Buckingham Way: One person, one family, one business at a time

It was 1987. President Reagan challenged Gorbachev to "tear down this wall." Disposable contact lenses became available. The Internet was inching along, and the first laptop computer, complete with a 3.5 inch floppy disk drive, was released by Hewlett-Packard.
 
Working from a small, upstairs loft with a slanted ceiling and a staff of one, Jay A. Buckingham watched the local and national news – and hunkered down.

​Mr. Buckingham had just left a large corporation because he wanted to offer truly independent financial advice to his clients. He knew that if he did things his way, versus the big company way, that he had the opportunity to follow his own sense of integrity – and to change more lives.

“I had been working for a large corporation and I decided to leave and become independent,” Mr. Buckingham said. “The ‘aha moment’ was the desire to move forward in a way that would allow me to satisfy my clients. I've always said that you don't work for an individual or a company, you work for the clients. That's true to this day.
